Police reported that they have arrested a man from Coral Spring on charges of DUI manslaughter in a crash that happened last August that led to a friend’s death who wanted to stop him from driving under the influence.

The suspect, identified as Patricio Arias Verdial, age 19, was apprehended last Friday and he will be facing, aside from DUI manslaughter: (1) owning marijuana and drug paraphernalia; (2) driving while impaired; and (3) damaging property due to DUI.

Authorities in Coconut Creek stated that the fatal accident took place on the 16th of August just outside the residence Joey Ianzano, age 19.  According to his friends, they attended Brad Paisley concert at West Palm Beach and on the way back to the home of Ianzano’s house in Block 5300 of Flamingo Place in Coconut Creek.

Friends said that Arias Verdial wanted to leave but Ianzano did not want him to go as he was impaired so he grabbed Verdial’s Mustang and told him to stop. It is not clearly explained if Mustang’s operator disregarded the advice of Ianzano to stop, or if he knew Ianzano was holding onto the car.

Verdial drove his car at top speed down the street and hit a tree, ejecting Ianzano who sustained severe head trauma.

Arias Verdial’s legal counsel stated last August that his client was not aware that Ianzano was holding onto the car, and believed it was a “horrific accident.” He added that Verdial was devastated by the loss of his friend.

His lawyer claimed it was an accident; it was nothing more and nothing less than an accident. It has affected Verdial so terribly that his friend lost his life.

Joey Ianzano’s death left his family bereft and affected his friends and classmates, who described him as someone always eager to help.

Friends and family recalled that Ianzano was planning to attend an emergency medical training at Broward College. His ambition was to be a firefighter, and it was not a surprise that he wanted to stop someone from driving impaired.

Joey Rodberg, age 20, stated last August that if it had happened to him that night and he had died, he would be consoled that at least he helped friend.

In the funeral, friends and family recalled the desire of Ianzano to help. He was in love with country music and on the night of his death, he just attended the concert at Cruzan Amphitheatre.

Booked into the Broward County Jail on Friday; Verdial was released the next day after settling a $59,700 bond.

DUI is one of the factors of death on the road so the Police Department of Bensalem initiated a new project involving blood testing in-house for those who appear drivers behind the wheels under the influence. Officers believed this is one remedy and expected to see more arrests.

Fred Harran who is Director of Public Safety said that the 25% increase in DUI apprehensions in less than three months exceeded their expectations.
